Discussion 4: Carol Dweck Video

How did 5th graders’ respond to receiving one or the other of these types of praise?  Why might praising innate ability promote a fixed mindset while praising effort promote a growth mindset?

After viewing the video you can see the facial expressions of some of the students when praised  one child seemed uncertainty about the praise but the student who was praised for working hard showed an expression of acceptance. as in "yes I did" . I feel that praising students who have a fixed mindset makes them feel as if they are only good at the task that they did well on. If they didn't do well on another task they do not want to take that challenge again. They want to stick to tasks that they know they wil do well on so that they can receive praise rather than no praise. These students need encouragement and motivation to know that just because a task seems difficult doesn't mean you are any less smarter you just have to work harder and take challeMeg's. When you are praising students you are letting them nknow thaey have done a job well. This encourages them to want to continue to do well . If a student completes a task that they are unsure of and they are successful and receive praise it makes them want to take on more task and more challenges because of the job well done. They want to continue to grow as teachers we have to praise and encourage our students to push themselves harder and challenge them to grow.

Article Discussion "Powerpoint is Evil"

I disagree with the author, I do not believe powerpoints are evil, in fact I believe that they are an enhancement to instruction. However, the type of powerpoints presented can make a difference. It is one thing to give information via powerpoint, but to overload it with words is another thing. By using a power point you can magnify important information in a short period of time versus reading a whole chapter with thousands of words.
Powerpoint's accelerate the learning as well as engage the audience. Powerpoints are also an easy way to use pictures to reinforce the lesson. By creating a visual you are catering to other learning styles. I have used powerpoints and also converted them into activ board flipcharts for another engaging technique. So therefore, I believe powerpoint presentations are more effective and not evil.

Disruptive Innovations

After watching the video “Disruptive Innovation Explained” and comparing digital technologies I know and use that have been or might be disruptive as it relates to educational procedures, I feel computers would be one of those technologies. When we think back computers started out only for those who could definitely afford them, those who were smart enough to use them, those with businesses, etc. Now computers have transformed our lives tremendously. Computers are now everywhere and used just about for everything, computers were a disruptive innovation because they are now utilized in different forms. There are no longer just desktop computers, but there are now laptop computers, tablets, handheld computers (cell phones) we carry around with us daily a small computer right in our purse or pocket for the gentlemen.
Since computers in all forms are so highly used I feel it would become a time where more schools will incorporate the use of computers into the learning for educational processes. Some schools are already equipped for students to have their own personal computer inside the classroom others aren’t, they have a few computers to each classroom, a computer that is hooked up to a main board (active board) where the teacher is allowed to teach and use the technology to display lessons to the students versus standing in front of the classroom lecturing.  These schools have computer labs as well. There are schools that also have iPads, tablets, and small computers that are accessible to the teachers to use for instruction. These digital technologies are available to assist the teacher in reaching the students, by providing game based learning, online assessments, etc. computers are a digital technology that has been disruptive in the efforts of improving education they are also the source of educational processes that are used for learning not only for the students but for the teachers as well.
Who knows maybe one day the computers will be equipped in the classrooms to be personalized and cater to the individual learning  needs for the students to provide differentiation so that all students can succeed.

Discussion 1

Do you think an Administrator should be like "Sniff and Scurry”?
Explain and be specific. How can you as an administrator deal with "Hem and Haws" in your schools.

After watching the movie "Who Moved My Cheese", Yes, I believe an adminstrator should be like Sniff and Scurry, I believe an adminstrator should be like them because they were accepting to change. Sniff and Scurry were also observant to know that change was happening, and that it will happen. As an administrator you have to be willing to change, you can not be afraid of change and wanting to keep things the way that they are all the time. When something doesn't work you must change it for the better. They were observant, they inspected their area and when the time came to change they changed with their situation. Sometimes you cant sit and ask the same questions over and over as in Why? sometimes the best thing to do is simply change and monitor in case you need to change again. Nothing stays the same forever especially in education, times change, people change, the way of doing things change, materials change, etc. As an administrator you have to be open to change in order to achieve success.
In order to deal with the Hem and Haws in my school I would definitely offer motivation. Haw wasnt as much a problem because after some self evaluation and a desire to want better he himself decided to change. He began recapping events that also let him know change doesn't just happen all of sudden it was already happening he was just not observant enough. so now he has witnessed and is accepting to change.

In order to deal with the Hem, I would offer motivation as far as for them to see that the change has happened all around them, I would as an administrator talk to them to see what the problem is and why they are having difficulties accepting the change, at least to get their perspective, also by doing this i would do motivational interviewing with them by asking questions that would allow them to re-examine thier thought process such as, "if things worked  exactly how you want, what would be different or what would you do different?"once this is done i would focus the most energy on the people who are focused on the change who have accepted it and who knows and understands that change will happen and will constantly happen. This is where the most significant results will take place and hopefully the results will be enough to show the one person who is unwilling to change that change is not always bad and also hope they understand that change will always happen wether they agree or not.
